Leeudoringstad was named after a particular type of thorn bush that once grew in abundance near the farm Rietkuil, on which the village was founded in 1920. Wolwespruit Riverine Vegetation
Attractions include Leeudoringstad Museum and Wolwespruit Nature Reserve:
Leeudoringstad Museum
In 1932 a train loaded with dynamite exploded in the centre of the town, information and photos of the disaster are displayed in the museum.
Wolwespruit Nature Reserve
Located 2km from town on the banks of the Vaal River, home to many antelope species.
From Johannesburg travel south towards the N12 Potchefstroom (either on the N1 Roodepoort, N3/N12 Kimberley or M1 Bloemfontein/Kimberley). Turn onto the N12 towards Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp. Before reaching Klerksdorp take the Orkney/Vaal River turn-off to the left.
Continue straight, going into Orkney. At the first set of traffic lights turn right and at the next set of traffic lights turn left. Proceed straight over the 4-way stop (you are now outside Orkney), and carry on towards Leeudoringstad. Travel for approximately 50kms to Leeudoringstad and at the 4-way stop turn right and the golf course in on the left hand side. |
