These were the times when Arabs and Indians sailed their dhows down south and traded beads and ceramics for the gold and ivory of the ancient African kingdoms ensconced in their fortresses at Mapungubwe and Thulamela. New cultural groups gradually moved in and the history of the VhaVenda and Shangaan became intertwined with that of the Voortrekkers to create a wonderful historical tapestry. Tales abound of the colourful characters who inhabited the area: Popi, who united the VhaVenda nation and later became known as Thohoyandou. The renegade Coenraad de Buys whose descendants still live in Buysdorp; BveKenya Barnard, the master poacher of the perilous Ivory Trail; and Voortrekker leader Louis Trichardt, after whom the principal town was previously named. Today the town is called Makhado, after the VhaVenda leader who ruled in the area for many years.
The western section of the region is dominated by the rocky spine of the majestic Soutpansberg Range. Much of this unique wilderness area forms part of the Western Soutpansberg Conservancy established in 1997 to conserve the natural environment, including its cultural history and man-made activities. The area boasts many historical sites ranging from the relics of the Stone Age people and their inimitable rock art, to the tracks of the Voortrekker wagons which carried European migrants into an unknown land. The natural beauty of the area and superb tourist facilities attract many tourists. To explore the region and experience its beauty tourists can take the Limpopo Valley Route.
To explore the Soutpansberg region and experience its beauty, tourists can take the Limpopo Valley route. Beyond the Soutpansberg the Limpopo Valley stretches across the country’s northern border incorporating a national heritage site, transfrontier area, national park and a host of other nature reserves. The Limpopo River is a life-giver in the predominantly hot, dry land through which it courses and supports a series of small, thriving farming villages. In the east the region is bounded by the Lowveld and the Kruger National Park of which the major portion falls within the Limpopo Province. The park is the flagship of South Africa’s national parks and is famous as much for its wildlife heritage, as for its advanced environmental management techniques. The African Ivory Route which extends through the northern reaches of the region offers an important ecotourism and 4×4 adventure destination for safari enthusiasts, while providing insight into the rich cultural legacy of the area.
To the south lie the area known as the ‘Land of Legend’ where the age-old ways of traditional African culture continue to this day. The region boasts a sacred lake and a holy forest among its many attractions and both natural and ancestral spirits are still held in awe by the VhaVenda people who live here. The mopane bushveld of the Soutpansberg region is ideal for game farming and an increasing number of game reserves and conservancies cater for the growing demands of tourism. The area offers excellent hunting, attracting both domestic and international visitors. The Soutpansberg is a summer rainfall area with temperatures averaging 30ºC in summer and 20-25ºC in winter.
Most of the Soutpansberg region is malaria-free, with the exception of the northeastern areas near the Zimbabwe and Mozambique borders, and the Kruger National Park. Visitors should obtain advice about appropriate malaria prophylactics before visiting the regions in summer months particularly.
The Tropic of Capricorn forms the southern boundary of the area and crosses the N1 some 49 km south of Makhado (Louis Trichardt). A much-photographed column marks the point where the road crosses the southernmost tropic of the sun. The major centres of the Soutpansberg region include Makhado in the central Soutpansberg, Alldays in the western Soutpansberg, Musina in the northern area and Thohoyandou in the east.
Directions
From the N1 coming from Pietersburg (Polokwane) turn left towards Louis Trichardt and at the 2nd 4-way stop turn right and drive into the town of Louis Trichardt. Continue down the road and at the 2nd 4-way stop turn left and continue straight. At the 4th set of traffic lights (next to First National Bank and ABSA Bank) turn left and carry on straight. At the 4-way stop turn left and then continue straight. The club is situated on the corner of Ruh Street and Hospitaal Street
