Location
Many years ago, along the banks of what is now the Gonubie River, a Thorny Bramble grew in profusion. The juicy sweet berry that grew on it was much sought after by the Xhosa inhabitants & they named the area "I GONUBIE" - the Xhosa name for Bramble Berry - from which Gonubie is derived.

The earliest records of Gonubie was made by Ensign Beutler in 1752. He relates traveling to the "Goenoebe River", where a hippo was shot & braaied by his party of men. In 1869 Sir Edward Brabant, a Major General well known throughout the British Empire, bought the farm "Gonubie Park" for £4000. The home he built still stands today. Over the years local farmers built holiday shacks at the river mouth & Gonubie's potential as a seaside resort was realized.

In 1933 Mr Louis Rosenbaurn bought Gonubie Park & began selling plots. The tiny settlement grew rapidly & today Gonubie's permanent residents number over 18500.

Directions
